Recipe for disaster: Cake tumbles from spin bike weeks before SunDrew
BERMUDA DUNES — Just weeks before the mildly anticipated SunDrew festival, DJ Mike Sapira - aka Cake - has suffered a low ankle sprain, falling off his spin bike early Saturday morning.
Yassie Soltani, the festival’s organizer, was reportedly set to announce Cake as the next addition to the SunDrew lineup when he suffered the injury.
“This low ankle sprain crushed our high hopes, leaving us at a middle ground,” said Soltani.
“We just don’t know if Cake will be ready in time. In my experience, it usually takes about 45 - 60 minutes from start to finish but that doesn’t seem like enough under the circumstances.”
Sapira took the tumble while teaching a Saturday morning spin class in Costa Mesa. Ambulances immediately responded to the scene after Sapira took a sip from his water bottle, connected his headset to his cellphone, and placed a call to 911.
According to sources close to HANZ, Cake’s girlfriend, he’s been hard at work rehabbing the injury with an innovative, time-intensive form of therapy called PlayStation that heals ankle sprains by strengthening the fast twitch muscles in the thumbs and forefingers.
HANZ did not respond to the times’ request for comment.
Soltani tried to stay positive, but she appeared emotionally whipped by the news.
“I’ve already taken enough heat for this festival. I just hope Cake pans out and we don’t have to cut him.”
